Welcome to the MAK DAO! This Decentralized Autonomous Organization initiated by the MAK is an experiment in digital culture and democracy.
In 2023, the MAK won the idea competition "Culture & Technology: Focus Museum" organized by the Vienna Business Agency and is one of the first museums to explore the potential of the DAO principle as a democratic tool to create new opportunities for active participation in the museum and to bring visitors, creatives, communities, stakeholders, and MAK employees closer together.
In this project, the MAK collaborated with Caliber and Process, published the White Paper and started a Discord Channel.
At the moment, the MAK explores the potentials of blockchain technology for democratic participation in the project BLOCKCHAIN:UNCHAINED: New Tools for Democracy (20.11.2024—17.8.2025, MAK Gallery). In this interactive playground designed and programmed by the young design collective Gemeinde-Bau (Katja-Anna Krug, Max Kure, Leo Mühlfeld, Anton Posch) you can explore and test different DAO scenarios.
The MAK Garden is a semi-public space, freely accessible during the opening hours of the museum and creates a direct connection to the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The MAK Garden serves as a DAO prototype, where the MAK Community can vote on proposed projects for the format KUNSTRASEN [ARTificial Turf].
